High bare mountain chromite country in Afghanistan

Afghanistan

Chromite Mining Project, Afghanistan

The ore body was proven. Everything else was the hard part. We built a route from a remote Afghan deposit to an international buyer, and it held.

The situation

What we walked into

Chromite in Afghanistan with the ore body proven and the hard part everywhere else.

High remote terrain, no infrastructure, a cross border logistics chain and a compliance environment that has to be handled correctly at every step.

What we did

End to end

Consultation

We assessed the deposit and set the extraction plan.

Then we did the work that actually decides whether an Afghan mineral project functions, which is designing the route from the mine to the buyer. Road haulage, border crossing, documentation, port handling and shipping, planned as one chain rather than a series of separate problems.

Equipment

We supplied drilling equipment suited to high altitude remote operation and built a consumable supply chain with sufficient buffer stock on site, because a resupply run in that terrain is measured in days and not hours.

Operations

We ran extraction and grade control, managed the haulage and border chain, and delivered ore to export.

The result

What changed

Ore moved from a remote Afghan deposit to international buyers through a working, repeatable route. The logistics chain held, which in that operating environment is the achievement.

Halberg is one of a small number of operators with real working experience of moving mineral product out of Afghanistan, and that experience is now available to other project holders as a consulting service.

Feedback

Mining in Afghanistan is not a mining problem. It is a logistics and compliance problem with a mine attached. Halberg understood that from the first meeting.
